Fiber optic modem G.703/X.21

Model: Article Number: 21-16xx, 21-1651, 21-1601

The 21-16xx, Fiber Optic Converter is intended to extend distance and to provide galvanic isolation for disturbance free insertion of 64kbps data into SDH/PDH 2Mbps G.703 connections by the use of the G.704 framing structure.

The converter is compatible with the FOT module in ABB’s tele protection terminals 550/560 for connecting the terminals to higher order networks. The 21-16xx converter running of its internal clock can also be used to directly interconnect protection equipment over leased lines using electrical E1 modems as SHDSL and alike.

The modem 21-1601 and 21-1651 from Fibersystem are combined fiberoptic synchronous and asynchronous modem with four different interfaces:

  • G.703 unbalanced 2Mbps,
  • G.703 balanced Nx64Kbps,
  • X.21
  • RS-530, not mounted on products produced after October 2006.

The modems are available in 2 versions:

  • 21-1601 runs on 110-230 VAC , +/- 20%, power supply.
  • 21-1651 runs on 48-250 VDC, +/- 20%, power supply.

The modem can be configured to use three models of clock generation:

  • Internal clock, where the modem generates the transmit clock.
  • External clock, where the modem recovers the clock from the selected interface.
  • Loop clock, where the modem recovers the clock from the fiber link.
  • Fiber optic transmission, immune to EI and RFI
  • Standards compliant for power substation installations
  • 19″ mounting with only 200mm depth
  • Single power supply range from 48VDC to 230VAC
Fiber optic G.703 64kbps CodirectionalThe ITU-standard “G.703 64kbit/s codirectional interface” describes a galvanic interface.

This interface.is commonly used by teleprotection equipment for connection to telecom multiplexers.
The 21-170 converts the codirectional interface signals to a proprietary fiber optic protocol used for example by teleprotection equipment from ABB.

G.703/704 E1 Unbalanced

The ITU-standard G.703 describes the physical and electrical characteristics of hierarchical digital interfaces at rates up to 140 Mbps.
G.704 describes frame structures on G.703 interfaces up to 45 Mbps.
E1 describes a galvanic G.703 interface with G.704 frames at 2048 kbps commonly used in telecommunication.
